What is the 4-H Hat?
Official green uniform 4-H hat branded with the University of California, Agriculture and Natural Resources (UC ANR) and the 4-H clover logo mark. A 4-H hat is NOT required for membership or for participation in any 4-H activity, event, or occasion.
What goes on the right side of the hat?
Stripes earned for each year completed in 4-H.
Year completion pin (primary, junior, intermediate and senior) - place above the stripe of the year the pin was earned, starting with the primary pins next to the 4-H clover
Officer pins - align with year earned.
100% Attendance pins - place below the stripe of the year the pin was earned.
Note: If a member earns more year stripes than can fit on the right side of the hat, they may "wrap around" their stripes and continue onto the left side of the hat.
What goes on the left side of the hat?
All-star, platinum, gold, silver, or bronze stars in front. You may "cascade" the stars.
Place the junior/teen leader emblems and the Hi 4-H patch (in that order) behind the stars

How does the member earn the year stripe and pin?
Criteria to earn a year stripe and pin for members are:
Be a member in good standing.
Complete a minimum of 6 hours of project instruction or more as required by the project leader.
Complete Annual Project Report (APR) form
Primary members, youth aged 5 to 8 years, do not complete the APR.
Primary members receive a year stripe and pin for participation in a project. Project completion is not required.
What is a year pin?
A “Year Completion Pin” is specific to the members age level as of 12/31. The Four pins available are Primary, Junior, Intermediate and Senior

White on green for members
Gold on green for jr/teen leaders
How do we get the year pin and stripe?
Year Pin: The year pin is provided by the County Program Leadership Unit / CIRC. Generally before Achievement Night, the 4-H Office will contact clubs with a list of members and the club will indicate what youth met the criteria to earn the pin. Pins will be provided to clubs at Achievement Night to distribute at their choosing.
Year Stripe: Clubs are responsible for purchasing the stripes from www.4hsupplies.com.
When do we distribute the year pin and stripe?
Either the last Club Meeting in May or the first Club Meeting in September.
What is an officer pin?
Members who hold an office in a 4-H Club may be awarded officer pins for positions such as: President, Vice President, Treasurer, and Secretary. Officer pins are also available for members who serve in other roles.
What is the Jr Leader Pin?
Youth Officers ages 8-12 years old who hold the position of Junior Leader receive this recognition. Members must complete the junior/teen leadership report in order to be eligible.
What is the Teen Leader Pin?
Youth Officers ages 13-19 years old who hold the position of Teen Leader receive this recognition. Members must complete the junior/teen leadership report in order to be eligible.
What is a 100% attendance pin?
If a member maintains perfect attendance at all 4-H Club meetings and is a member in good standing, they are eligible to receive a 100% attendance pin. 4-H Clubs may determine appropriate excused absences and determine whether they count towards 100% attendance.
What is the purple star ranking?
This is a county specific recognition for primary members when they enter their first primary level record book to the county record book review.
What if the member doesn’t like where the pins should go?
Medals may be worn on either side of the hat. Placing them on the left is recommended.
Should members add other items to their hats?
No other pin or ribbon should be worn on the hat other than 4-H related items. The hat should reflect the dignity of the 4-H Youth Development Program. Some items that should not be worn on the hat include buttons, fair medals, convention badges or other regalia.
